Coastline

A Philosophical Journey on the Seaside

What can philosophy do before the ecological catastrophe? In search of answers, Pierre Cassou-Noguès left his library and cycled from Biarritz to Ostend, following a coastline threatened by rising waters, erosion, polution. Born of a bleak experience—the massive wildfires of the summer of 2022 in the Landes—this journey becomes a true living inquiry. The cyclist sketches out a different relationship to the world. The philosopher questions our concepts and our forms of life. Both seeks ways to make other futures desirable. Half travel journal, half meditation, this narrative recounts how experience transforms thought.
